Wild Island ‘Two Futures Tour’ to burnt areas at Lake Mackenzie

April 9, 2016 @ 6:00 am - 9:00 pm

The road to Lake Mackenzie is now open and Wild Island is organising a day trip to the area on Saturday 9th April. Driving time to Lake Mackenzie from Hobart is about 4 1/4 hours and we will meet at the carpark below the Lake Mackenzie dam wall at 11am.

The walk to the area of burnt pencil pines is of moderate grade, up-hill along a rough bush track, and will take about 30 minutes. We’ll spend several hours in the area of the burnt pines before returning to the cars. Participants will need to be well prepared and self reliant in terms of clothing and lunch. The walk takes us to altitudes of around 1200 metres and extremes of weather may be encountered. Comfortable walking shoes, multiple layers of warm clothing, waterproof jackets and trousers, gloves and beanie are essential.

Although we will be on hand as guides to the area only on the Saturday, we would encourage you to consider spending the extra day in the area – it’s a long day trip!

Numbers are limited and bookings are essential. In the event of inclement weather the trip may be postponed. Wild Island will help co-ordinate transport for those who are registered and doing the tour as a day trip from Hobart. Please let us know when you register whether you require a lift or are able to offer transport.

Responsibility and personal liability for the trip lies with participants. If you are unable to attend this event, a map of the fire effected areas in this vicinity is attached and with proper preparation the trip can be undertaken in your own time. Special care should be taken as winter approaches! This map is for guidance only. The route is the beginning of the track to Blue Peaks. The Lake Mackenzie 1:25,000 map provides more detail.
