Marine Debris Weaving with Jess Leitmanis

September 11, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 4:30 pm

110$

SOLD OUT – Please email us if you missed out and we can put your name on a waiting list for future weaving workshops
info@wildislandtas.com.au

Create a unique coil basket from marine debris rope that was collected from the rugged coastline in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area with South West Marine Debris Cleanup.

During this full day workshop, Jess will share insights into her creative process, including rope preparation and a simple coil basket weaving technique. A relaxed and experimental hands on workshop using salvaged rope, that will encourage you to use your imagination, and to reinvent well travelled pieces of marine debris.

Be prepared to get your hands a little dirty, as the rope has been living in nature for quite some time… It smells like the beach too. Suitable for beginners, and anyone who is inspired to weave with an unconventional medium.

You’ll never look at marine debris in quite the same way…

What we will supply:
– all marine debris rope and fishing line to create your weaving
– morning and afternoon tea (and coffee…)

What you need to bring:
– large wool/tapestry needle (or 2 – a spare can be handy)
– a thimble
– a pocket knife
– agile fingers prepared for some tough work

This workshop is limited to 10 people so book early to avoid missing out.

We will stop for a lunch break where you can purchase your lunch from one of the numerous eateries in the Salamanca area, or of course you can bring your own.

About Jess…
Jess Leitmanis is an artist who creates sculptures and vessels with rope reclaimed from the ocean. Over the past two years she has travelled to a number of remote regions in Australia to collect marine debris rope for her artwork. In 2015 she ventured to the Southwest National Park, Tasmania, with South West Marine Debris Cleanup and returned home with a personal stash of over half a ton of rope.  Following that she journeyed to the opposite end of Australia, Kutini-Payamu National park in Far North Queensland, with Clean Coast Collective.

In both 2015 and 2016, Jess has held a solo exhibition in Melbourne as part of Sustainable Living Festival, titled Future Sands and Tomorrow’s Nest respectively.

Jess is slowly weaving her way through her stash of rope, and continues to accumulate more at every opportunity…
